How To Receive The Holy Spirit

Instructions:



Discussion:

1. Jesus told His disciples to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Read Acts 1:8
A. Ordinary believers in the Old Testament did not have the in filling of the Holy Spirit.
1. Only those who are born again can receive the Holy Spirit.
2. The only people who had the anointing of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament were prophets and priests.
B. Jesus wanted all of His followers to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
1. The Holy Spirit isn’t just for full-time ministers.
2. God wants every one of His children to have the Holy Spirits power.
C. Jesus promised that God would not allow His children to receive a counterfeit spirit if they asked for the Holy Spirit.
1. If a child asked for a piece of bread, would his father give him a stone?
(Hold up rock)
2. If a child asked for fish, would his father give him a serpent?
(Hold up snake)
3. If a child asked for an egg, would his earthly father give him a scorpion?
(Hold up scorpion)

II. When a believer receives the Holy Spirit, he speak in a language he does not know. Read Acts 2:1-4.
A. When we speak in tongues, our minds don’t know what we are saying (I Corinthians 14:14)
1. Sometimes our minds don’t think big enough for Gods plans.
2. When we speak with tongues, we talk about secrets with God
B. When we speak with tongues, it makes our spirits strong.
1. It does for our spirits what weight lifting does for our bodies.

C. The Holy Spirit does not talk in tongues. We do.
1. The Holy Spirit gives us the words to say inside our hearts.
2. We do the talking in tongues, not the Holy Spirit.

III. Speaking in unknown tongues is like having a spiritual tongue of fire.
A. John the Baptist prophesied that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit would be like fire.
(Hold up the boys face with fire coming out of his mouth)
1. Believers saw tongues of fire on the Day of Pentecost when they were first filled with the Holy Spirit.
2. Fire purifies and drives away wild beasts.

B. All animals are naturally afraid of fire, including snakes and scorpions.
1. If we speak in other tongues, we will keep the poison of hateful words from getting into our mouths.
2. Speaking in other tongues gives us boldness and keeps us from being paralyzed by fear.
C. Speaking in other tongues is a wonderful way to praise God.
