Discussion:
-In this bag are some items that will remind you about things we celebrate. When I hold something up yell out as loud as you can what celebration the item reminds you of.
-How do you celebrate these special days?
-Music
-Dressing up
-Games
-Food
-Presents
-With lots of people
Who were the first people to celebrate Jesus?
-On the night Jesus was born the shepherds the shepherds and angels were the first to celebrate Jesus
Story
(Turn off the lights. Have 2 people shine flashlights on the front. Get 2 volunteers to dress up - one Shepherd and one angel. Have a doll wrapped up at the front.)
It was late at night, almost the morning. It was dark and cold in the fields where the shepherds were sleeping and watching their flocks of sheep. (Have a shepherd lay on the ground and sleep)
Then all of a sudden an angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds. Does anyone remember what angels look like? (Have angel stand on a chair)
The shepherds were afraid at first. But the angel said, "Don't be afraid. We have great news for you. A savior has been born in the city of David. You will find the baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manager." (Who knows what a manger is?)
Then the whole sky was full of angels and they began to celebrate Jesus Birth by singing.
The shepherds were amazed and they wanted to see this special baby. After the angels left they decided to go and find this baby. They went to Bethlehem, the city of David. Just as the angels promised, the shepherds found baby Jesus and his family in a stable. The baby was lying in a manger.
The shepherds honored and praised baby Jesus. Then they went out and spread the good news about the baby.
Conclusion:
How can we celebrate Jesus?
The angels celebrated Jesus by singing. The shepherds celebrated Jesus because they went looking for him and honored him once they found him. Then they told as many people as they could about him.
