Discussion:

Jesus said in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Have the children repeat the verse in several different voices, so they remember the Bible verse.

What do you think Jesus meant when he said, “I am the Way”? He is the way to what?

The Bible teaches us that when God created us, He intended for us to always be close with Him. God created us to have a relationship with Him.

But there was a problem – sin.

When Eve sinned back in the Garden of Eden. When she disobeyed God, sin became apart of all our lives.

The Bible says that everyone has sinned and disobeyed God.

Sin causes separation

This table over here with _____________ represents humans like us.
(Point to one table and choose a pre-planned volunteer. The volunteer should stand on the table.)

This table over here represents God.
(Point to one table and choose “God”. The volunteer should stand on the table.)

(Stand in the middle)

Throughout all of history humans have tried to do many things to get to God. Humans really want to be close to God again.

(Have the human volunteer act this out by reaching towards God.)
Humans try to get to God by Good Works

Ask: What are some good things __________ can do to make God really happy?
(feed a homeless person, be nice to someone etc)

(You try to convince the volunteer to jump across the gap. They refuse. There is no way they will make it.)

Good works will not get you to God.

Humans try to get to God through false religions.

Example: They think getting in touch with nature will bring them closer to God. They think other religions like Islam, Jehovah Witnesses or Mormons will bring them close to God. They think meditating and yoga will get them closer to God.

(Lay the short piece of wood out from the Human table towards the gap. Try to convince the human to walk on that piece of wood and that it will get them to God. The human should look way over at God and refuse.)

Humans try to get to God by being religious.

Ask: What are some religious things __________could do to make God happy?
(Pray, go to church lots, read the Bible)

(Lay the long flimsy piece of wood across the gap, having it rest on both tables. Try to convince the human to walk across the piece of wood. Explain that if He goes to church and prays enough he will hopefully get to God. The human cautiously begins to take a step and then refuses.)

Jesus is the WAY to God.

At the beginning of the lesson we learned a Bible verse. Does anyone remember what it was?

Jesus said, “I am the WAY, the truth and the life.”

(Take out a poster of the verse. Lay the big solid plank across between the 2 tables. Hammer the poster in the middle so all the children can read it.)

Jesus is the only WAY to get to God.

Gospel Message Reviewed:

God was so sad when Adam and Eve disobey Him.

He wanted a relationship with humans, but he couldn’t have one any longer because of sin.

Sin separated humans from God.

God sent is Son-Jesus to the earth.

Jesus died for us.

Jesus died as a punishment for our sin.

Jesus’ death on the cross fixed the gap between humans and God.

Jesus is the only WAY for us to get to God.

Jesus is the only WAY for us to have a relationship with God.

When we decide to live for Jesus our relationship with God is restored. Our sins are forgiven, and we get God’s special gift of Eternal life.

Conclusion: All the work has been done for you to have a relationship with God. Jesus became sin, so that your sins would be forgiven. Jesus made a way for you to get to God. All you have to do is decide to live for Jesus.
