Introduction:

Over the past few months we have been talking about what?

Who can name all the Fruit of the Spirit?

Today we are going to talk about the last Fruit of the Spirit.

Can anyone guess what one we have not talked about yet?

Self-Control

What does Self-Control mean?

It means to be in control of one’s thoughts, actions, and feelings.

How do you think Jesus wants you to think?

How do you think Jesus wants you to act?

How do you think Jesus wants you to feel towards others?

Self- Control is about choices – what will we choose in every situation

2. Object Lesson
A. Choose a responsible volunteer to come to the front.
-Have them CHOOSE a partner.
-Explain that they are going to play a game of catch.
-Have them CHOOSE what they want to use – a ball or an egg.
-Have them play.
-What was the outcome?
-What would have been the outcome if they had CHOOSEN the other thing?

B. Choose a responsible volunteer to come to the front.
-Have them CHOOSE a partner.
-Explain that they are going to play a game of Frisbee.
-Have the CHOOSE what they want to use – a plastic disc or a china plate.
-Have them play.
-What was the outcome?
-What would have been the outcome if they had CHOOSEN the other thing?

C. Now we are going to have a race.
-CHOOSE 2 people to be in the race.
-Have them CHOOSE 2 partners.
-The object is to get as much water as possible in you bucket.
-One at a time you have to take a cup full of water – run to your bucket and dump the water in the bucket. Run back and the next person goes.
-Let one of the teams CHOOSE which cup they want to use (holey or not).
-The other team gets the other cup.
-Race
-Talk about the results.
-What would have been the outcome if they had CHOOSEN the other cup?

3. Conclusion:

Self- Control is about the choices we make.

In every situation we have 2 choices to make:
TO OBEY GOD
TO DISOBEY GOD

The Bible teaches us if we love God then we will choose to obey Him

Self-control is obeying God even when we don’t feel like it

For example:
We are so mad that we feel like punching someone out – but we choose not to-we choose to do what God wants.

We are so tired we feel like not doing our chores or homework but we choose to do them we choose to honor our parents and those in authority over us because that is what God wants us to do.

We feel like telling a little lie in a situation because it would be so much easier, but we choose not to because God wants us to always be honest.
