Discussion:

Introduction:

Review the Fruit of the Spirit

(You could have a competition to see if anyone remembers all the fruits)

So far we have talked about: Love, joy, peace, patience, and kindness

Today we are going to talk about GOODNESS

What do you think GOODNESS means? (let the kids respond)
-Goodness has to do with how you act.

-Goodness is being kind, helpful, and honest.

-GOODNESS MEANS YOU ARE BETTER THAN AVERAGE.

When you decide to live for Jesus you need to act better than the average person.

Object Lesson:

Read Luke 6:45 - A good person has good things saved up in his heart. And so he brings good things out of his heart. But an evil person has evil things saved up in his heart. So he brings out bad things

Today I brought 2 containers. On the outside these two containers look identical-exactly the same – there is no difference.

Let’s see what the difference is on the inside.

Choose 2-3 volunteers to come to the front.

(Hold up the container with the sprite – you should be able to tell the containers apart but no one else should be able to)

Say: A good person has good things saved up in his heart – and so he brings good things out of his heart. (Pour to pop into the volunteer’s cups and have them drink it)

A good person has good things saved up in his heart and so he brings good things out of his heart.

Ask the volunteers how the liquid from the first container tasted? GOOD

If we have good things in our heart then our actions will be good – What are some good actions we can have?
-being kind to our brother or sister
-helping a friend with their school work
-doing chores for a neighbor who can’t do them

(Hold up the container with the vinegar)

Say: But an evil (bad) person has evil things saved up in his heart. So he brings out bad things. (Pour the vinegar into the volunteer’s cups and have them drink some)

An evil or bad person has evil things saved up in their heart and so he brings bad things out of his heart.

Ask the volunteer how the liquid from the second container tasted? BAD

If we have evil or bad things in our heart, our actions will be bad. Can you think of some examples of this?
-If we hate, we will say hateful words
-If we are angry, we will pick fights with people
-If we have disrespectful thoughts about our parents we will be rebellious

Conclusion:

Boys and girls we have a choice to make today.

Are we going to be a good person that has good things in their heart, which causes them to act in a good way?

Are we going to be an evil person that has bad things in their heart, which causes them to act in a bad way?

When we decide to live for Jesus we are saying that we are going to be that good person.

Maybe there are some boys and girls here today that are having a hard time being that good person that Jesus wants you to be.

You are having a hard time being better than average. We can pray for you.
