Introduction:
-Over the next few weeks we are going to learn about something very important
-What we are about to learn Jesus considered it to be the most important commandment?
-What is a commandment? – An order or an instruction, a rule we must follow
-So, once you decide to live for Jesus you must follow these instructions Jesus gave
Bible Verse: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. . . Love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:37-39
-Repeat in different verses
-Have a competition between the girls and boys
Love:
-We are going to talk about this verse over the next few weeks.
-Before we begin I wanted to spend some time talking about love.
-There are 3 statements about love in the Bible we need to understand. . .
Skit:
Eric: I know all about love. Let me take it from here. Today I brought something that I really love. I mean – I REALLY LOVE what I brought today. Can anyone guess what it is? (Allow the kids to try and guess.) It’s a candy bar. I REALLY LOVE this candy bar.
Michelle: Pastor Eric, I think what you mean to say is you really like candy bars.
Eric: No. I REALLY LOVE candy bars. I love them so much. As a matter of fact, I just can’t wait any longer to enjoy this candy bar.
(Pastor Eric should open it and make a big deal about eating it. After he take one bite, he realizes it is disgusting. It is stale. Try to get napkins to spit it out-make a big deal)
That was disgusting! I hate this candy bar.
Michelle: Pastor Eric, I thought you LOVED candy bars.
Eric: I do but not this one – it is old and stale and it tastes nasty.
Michelle: Pastor Eric, that is not LOVE.
We use the word LOVE when we talk about a lot of things. We love basketball. We love pizza. We love ice cream. We love video games. What really mean is we like something a lot.
LOVE is a lot stronger than our feelings towards these things, and LOVE never changes.
Pastor Eric, you said you LOVED candy bars, but your feeling changed when the tasted wasn’t very good. LOVE NEVER CHANGES. What you really meant is that you really like candy bars when they taste good.
Pastor Eric we are going to be talking about love over the next few weeks. Did you know that there are 3 very important things we should know about love?
1. God loves us
-This is one of the most important things
-The Bible teaches us that God so loved the world . . .the world includes me!
2. We need to Love God
-When we decide to live for Jesus- we are telling Jesus that we are going to love Him
-Jesus said the most important instruction is Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind . .
3. We need to Love others
-Jesus said this is the second most important instruction
-This is probably one of the hardest things to do
-It is easy to love some people but it is hard to love other people.
-Jesus said we are to love everyone-even the people that are hard to love.
