Who remembers the story of Jericho? Joshua led the march around the city, they gave the victory shout and the walls fell down.

Jericho was a huge city that was almost impossible to defeat.

Just before the walls fell down, Joshua told the Israelites something very important. He told them that no one was to take any clothes, silver, gold or anything else from the city of Jericho for themselves.

Winning the battle of Jericho was so easy for Joshua and the Israelites because God's power and wisdom was with them. Once the one the battle, the city was destroyed.

Just after Jericho, Joshua and the Israelites had to fight another battle at a very small city. This should be no problem at all after all they just defeated Jericho. Joshua sent some men to spy out the land. Then he sent just 3,000 men to the City of Ai. This battle would be a piece of cake.
Joshua was wrong? The men he sent to battle ran away when they saw the men from Ai. The men from Ai struck down 36 of the Israelites. They ran all the way back to camp. When Joshua heard about what happened, he ripped his clothes and got on his face before God.

God told Joshua that someone in Israel had sinned. Someone had stolen things from the city of Jericho before it was burned. God said that person and all his possession had to be punished.

The next day Joshua figured out just who had sinned against God. It was a man named Achan. Achan and all his possessions were burned in a nearby valley.

Now that the Israelites had gotten rid of sin, God said that they could go to war and that He would give them the power and wisdom they needed to win.

This time Joshua sent 30,000 men to take the city of Ai. God showed Joshua exactly what to do just like he had with the city of Jericho. Joshua followed God's plans and they won the battle at Ai.

The power and wisdom of God was able to operate through them because they got rid of sin.
