Discussion:

1. Jesus gave His disciples authority to cast evil spirit out of people - Matthew 10:1
A. The devil and evil spirits are responsible for sickness, pain and suffering in this world. Not every sickness is caused by an evil spirit, but all sickness and disease come from Satan.
B. Jesus’ disciples went out to preach and heal the sick as they had seen Him do. God desires all of us to do the works of Jesus. Jesus gave the disciples the spiritual authority to use His Name and stop the devil’s works. The disciples saw many wonderful miracles.
C. The faith of Jesus’ disciples was very strong because they had been listening carefully to Jesus Words. Faith comes when we hear the Word of God. Romans 10:17

2. One day the disciples were not able to cast a demon out of a lunatic boy.
A. They were surprised that the demon would not obey them.
B. The demon caused the boy to act crazy. He would cause the boy to fall into fire to burn himself. The demon would also cause the boy to fall into the water to drown himself.
C. The boy’s father brought him to Jesus, who immediately cast out the demon. The demon left as soon as Jesus spoke to it. The boy came into his right mind.

3. Jesus’ disciples learned the reason why they were not able to cast out the demon.
A. Jesus’ disciples asked Jesus why they were not able to cast out he demon. Jesus told them that they were unable to cast out he demon because of their unbelief.
1. Unbelief is the opposite of faith.
2. Unbelief grows strong when our faith grows weak.
3. The disciples had quickly given up when the demon did not obey them.

B. The disciples once had the faith to cast out demons, but they had let it grow weak by not keeping it recharged. (Show the charged battery verses the drained battery) Talk about how we need to keep our faith charged every day with God’s Word.
1. Faith comes into our hearts when we hear God’s Word
2. We spend our faith when we pray, when we trust God and when we resist the devil.
3. Faith has to be recharged if it is to keep its effectiveness. (Just like we can recharge batteries with a battery recharger)
