b. What does compassion mean?

Acting

Cold Wind:
2 volunteers
Fan

Thunderstorm:
2 volunteers
2 sets of pot lids

Weather Victims:
4 volunteers

Blanket:
2 volunteers

Umbrella:
2 volunteers

First Scene:
Have 2 weather victims come to the front. Have the cold wind blow the fan on them and huff and puff. The 2 weather victims need to act really cold. The two wind victims need to act really mean. When the music starts have them acting (Beetle juice?). When the music ends they are to stop

Dialogue:
1.How do the weather victims feel?
2.What should we do?
3.Should we just watch and let them freeze?
4.Eventually the blanket people should wrap a blanket around them.

Have volunteers sit down

Second Scene:
Have the other 2 weather victims come to the front. Have the thunder storm bang their pots and pans and walk around them looking really mean. The weather victims should act soaking wet. When the music plays have them start acting. When the music stops have them stop.

Dialogue:
1.How do the weather victims feel?
2.What should we do?
3.Should we watch them get soaking wet?
4.Eventually the umbrella people should come up and put their umbrella over them.

Compassion is:

LOVE + ACTION

-Love without action might sound something like this.
-(To the weather victim) "I am so sorry you got all wet like that I hope you don't get sick or anything."
-It sounds nice but it is not compassion- You are not doing anything about the situation.

-Action without love might sound something like this:
(The weather victim) "You are so stupid to be out here in this cold. Can't you use your brains? - Throw a blanket at them and walk away.

-While I may have helped the person, I wasn't very loving was I?

Jesus had compassion (story of the loaves and fish)

-Jesus was preaching to this huge crowd In the middle of no place.
-There were 5000 men with all their wives and children
-When night came everyone was very hungry
-The disciples wanted to send the people away so they could find food (that would be a loving thing to do)
-Jesus said, "No have everyone sit down and we will feed them." (That is the compassionate thing to do)
-The disciples said but we have only found a young boy with 5 loaves and 2 fish. -What are we going to do? Should we go and buy food?
-Jesus had everyone sit down.
-He prayed for the food, giving thanks to God for what they had. Then He told the disciples to pass out the food.
-The disciples had enough food for everyone.
-When they collected the leftovers there were twelve baskets full.
-Jesus showed compassion
i. Love - he saw the people were hungry, he was concerned about them
ii. Action - he fed the people

Conclusion:
If we want to be a wise person we must have compassion. Have everyone think of someone they could have compassion on. (Offer some suggestions)

Remember what compassion is LOVE + ACTION = COMPASSION
