Introduction:
Today I am going to tell you another story about Jacob. Last week we talked about the time when Jacob lied to his dad and pretended to be his brother Esau. Then later in Jacob’s life a man named Laban deceived him. Jacob worked for 7 long years to marry the woman of his dreams – Rachel. On their wedding day Laban had him marry Rachel’s older, ugly sister Leah.

Moving to Bethel
-Years later God wanted Jacob and his family to move to a place called “Bethel”
-Bethel means “House of God”

Getting Rid of Idols
-Jacob and his family worshipped idols.
-Explain what an idol is
-God told Jacob that before they were allowed to move to Bethel or the “house of God”, they had to get rid of their idols –all of them.

Burying the idols
-Jacob and his family buried all their idols under a tree before entering Bethel the “house of God.”

What does this have to do with me?
-The Bible says that when we decide to live for Jesus or become a Christian that we (our bodies) become God’s house.
-When we decide to live for Jesus The Holy Spirit moves inside of us. Just like you move in a house – God’s Spirit moves into you. God is living on the inside of us.
-There is something important we have to do in order for us to be God’s house.
-We have to get rid of the idols in our life.
-Most of you do not have gold monkeys and elephants you worship around your house.
-An idol is anything that is more important than God in your life.

Bag of Idols
-Inside this bag I have some things or pictures of things that could be idols in our life.
-Many of these things are not bad, but they become bad when they are more important than God.
-They become bad when we would rather spend all our time on these things than God.

Conclusion:
Have everyone bow their heads and close their eyes. Now I want you to think of things that might be an idol in your life. You need to decide to get rid of these idols and put God first in your life.
