Introduction:
Before I tell you the next quality a Christian should have I want to ask you some questions
-What if a doctor prescribed the wrong medicine to someone?
-What if your teacher never taught you how to read?
-What if a babysitter was watching TV while the baby crawled out the front door?
-What if a pilot fell asleep while flying an airplane?
-What if an ambulance driver forgot to put gas in the ambulance?
-What if a preacher slept in until noon on Sunday?
-What if the mail carrier lost your letters?
-What if your chore was to take out the trash but you never did?
-What if your job was to feed your pet fish but you never did?

-All of these jobs are different but they have one thing in common.
-In order to do these jobs a person must BE RESPONSIBLE
-If we are going to live our lives the way Jesus wants us to we must BE RESPONSIBLE.
-What does it mean to BE RESPONSIBLE?
-To be reliable
-To do a job well
-To keep promises
-To show people they can depend on you

Bible Story - The Man Who Went On a Vacation (Matthew 25:14-30)

Introduction: Today I am going to tell you a story that Jesus told. This story tells us what happens when we are responsible and what happens when we are not.

Once there was a man (that's me) who decided to go on a vacation. Let's see I always wanted to go to Hawaii. (Put on a lei) Just before I went on vacation I put my servants in charge of everything I owned.

I had three servants. I called in the first servant. (Pick a volunteer) I gave him five very expensive coins called talents. I called in the second servant. (Pick a volunteer) I gave him two coins. I called in my last servant. (Pick a volunteer) I gave him one coin.

When I was done I went on my vacation. Boy did I have fun. I laid on the beach, swam in the ocean, stayed in a nice hotel, and took lots of pictures.

While I was gone, my first servant was very responsible with the money I gave him. He worked very hard, and doubled the amount of money I gave him. He ended up with ten coins. (Hold up ten coins-have someone hand him five more) My second servant was also very responsible. He also worked very hard. He ended up with 4 coins-twice as many as I gave him. (Hold up 4 coins-have someone hand him 2 more coins) My third servant did something really dumb. Can you guess what it was? He took the one coin I gave him and buried it. (Hand him a shovel and have him pretend to dig)

When I got back I made a meeting with each of my servants. The first servant came to me and showed me how he now had 10 coins and I was so proud of him. (Have everyone clap for him.) I told him that since he was responsible with what I gave him, that I would give him even more to be responsible for. How exciting! Then the second servant came to me. I told him I was also proud of him, as he had shown great responsibility. (Have everyone give him a hand) I told him that I would also increase his responsibility.

When it came to the third servant's meeting, I couldn't believe what happened. He told me he buried the coin. I thought he was crazy and very irresponsible. (Have everyone boo him) I immediately took away his one coin. I fired him and had him thrown out of my house. He was so irresponsible how could I continue to trust him?

(Have everyone sit down and collect the props)

Conclusion:
What happened to the 2 responsible servants? They got more responsibility.

What happened to the irresponsible servant? He had his responsibility taken away from him.

As we grow up everyone wants responsibility and more privileges. Everyone wants to venture out and do things on his or her own. If you want other adults like your parents, teachers, and grandparents to give you more responsibility then first you must do the jobs you have well. Remember the Bible verse says, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart . . ." If we are going to live the way Jesus wants us to live we must be responsible. We must do our jobs well, keep our promises, and show others that they can depend on us.

Pledge: (Have all the kids stand up and raise their right hand. Have them repeat after you) I promise to do my best to be responsible. I will do all my jobs well. I will keep my promises, and I will show others that they can depend on me.
