Discussion:

Over the past several weeks we have been talking about important qualities a Christian needs to have in their life.

Can you list the ones we have talked about: (let the kids guess then you can go over the list)
1.Loving others
2.Self-control
3.Being Truthful
4.Forgiving others - not holding a grudge
5.Obeying God

Today we are going to talk about another important quality you must have as a Christian.

Once you have decided to live for Jesus - you must be holy

(You could have someone trying to put on something that has holes in it. They could be interrupting the person teaching - Why do I suddenly need to be holy. All my friends are going to make fun of me . . .)

Teacher - That is not what Holy means.

It means we need to stay away from sin. We need to live a pure life

Memory verse:

The Bible says in 1 Peter 1:16 "Be holy because I am holy."

(You could have the kids repeat the verse in different voices - loud, soft, under water)

Object Lesson:

(Before class give one of the watches to a leader to wear. Put the other watch in magic bag compartment. Set the bag so it looks empty.)

Ask to borrow someone's watch - whoever you gave it to.

Today I want to demonstrate what sin does.

Sin is bad things we do - the things that make Jesus sad - Sin is when we disobey God

Sin destroys and ruins our life just like I am about to ruin this watch

(Start to beat the watch with the hammer. Keep all the pieces together. Tell the leader who "gave" you the watch to act upset.)

When we decide to follow sin, our life is full of anger, rebellion, unhappiness etc. . .

Our life is destroyed by sin just like this watch is now destroyed. ___________, I hope you are not too mad at me for doing this.

Now I am going to put all the pieces into my bag. (Hold up the change bag. Show that it is empty.) Put the pieces in the bag.

The good news is that when we mess up and when we choose to follow sin, Jesus will forgive us if we ask him.

The Bible teaches us - if you confess your sin He will forgive you. Jesus will restore you.

(Pull out the new watch.)

Conclusion:

The Bible teaches us that we need to "Be holy." We need to stay away from sin.

When we do mess up, Jesus will forgive us and restore us if we ask Him to.

(Have the kids close their eyes and think if there is anything they need to ask Jesus to forgive them of. Then pray with them.)
