Posted by: Buffalo Dream Center

Topic: Bible Verses

Verse: Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7

Props:

Box of cereal like fruit loops
Box of macaroni
Bowls

Instructions:

(Before class pour out the cereal and replace it with macaroni noodles)

Discussion:

Introduction:

-What is this?
-It is a box of ______________ cereal.
-Who likes this kind of cereal?
-What is your favorite kind of cereal?

Object Lesson:

-Today I thought I would share some of this cereal with you.
-Who would like to come to the front and have some cereal?

(Pick one boy and one girl to come to the front and have some cereal with you. Set up the little table at the front with a bowl for each and a spoon. Open the box of cereal and begin pouring it in their bowl, so all the boys and girls can see what you are pouring into their bowl. Once the bowl is poured announce that we are going to begin to eat the cereal.)

-What is wrong?
-When you first came up hear you were excited to share my cereal. Now you don’t seem so excited to eat my cereal. I thought you liked _______________ cereal.

(The children or volunteers should be pointing out that what you poured in the bowl was not ________________________ cereal.)

Point:

-We can learn an important lesson from this.
-On the outside we can look like one thing but have something different inside.
-On the outside we can
-Wear the right clothes
-Say the right things
-Act the right way
-Go to church
-Please all our friends
-But the inside is different. On the inside we could be:
-Angry
-Rebellious
-We don’t really care about our relationship with God
-We don’t really care about other people and our family.

God Looks at the Heart

-In 1 Samuel 16:7 the Bible teaches us

“Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

-God is interested in what is inside of us
-We might be worried about our outward appearance-do I have the right clothes? Does my hair look good? What kind of shoes am I wearing?
-God cares about one thing – What is in your heart?
-God knows what is in our heart.
-God knows if we have something in our heart that we shouldn’t have.

Conclusion:
-If we love God with all of our heart, what do you think should be in our heart?
-Do you have secrets in your heart? Do you have something different on the inside than what is on the outside?
