You Cannot Bury Sin

Topic: Bible Verses

Verse: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Props:

3 containers (tins or plastic)
1 large box
1 piece of rotten meat
1 piece of fresh raw meat
1 piece of jerky
pair of thongs

Instructions:

A few days before the lesson lie out a piece of meat and let it go bad. Place one type of meat in each container, and place the containers in the box.

Discussion:

1. God does not like sin.
A. Sin is breaking God’s law.
B. God’s laws were created to give peace and order to the universe.
C. When anyone breaks the law of God, he brings trouble on himself.
1. God loves us so much that He hates to see anything destroy our peace and happiness.
2. Since sin looks fun and doesn’t bring harm immediately, some people are deceived into thinking that it doesn’t hurt at all. Sin is like a stick of dynamite with a long fuse. It sparkles at first and it’s fun to watch, but it explodes, it brings death.)

2. As Christians, we must learn how to deal with sin.
A. We sometimes commit sins even after we come to Christ.
1. This doesn’t mean that we are not saved.
2. But we do need to get rid of the sin. (Bring out the container with the fresh piece of meat and open it.)
B. Sin must not be left alone. (Open the container with the fresh meat. Explain that the meat will rot if it is not dealt with. It will not get better, but it will only grow worse.)
1. Some people commit sins and won’t ask God to forgive them.
2. Some people try to hide their sins, thinking that the problem will just go away

(Place the fresh meat in the container and put it back in the larger box.)

C. Sin that is hidden only gets worse.
(Bring out the container with the spoiled meat in it and open it. You may wish to ask a volunteer to smell it. After the effect is achieved, close the lid and hold the container to illustrate your next point).
1. It doesn’t do any good to hide your sin.
2. You are always better off admitting your wrong and confessing your sin to God and those you have wronged. Read 1 John 1:9
(Put the meat container back in the box.)

3. God has a way to get rid of our sins.
A. God laid the penalty of our sins on Jesus. - Read 2 Corinthians 5:20
B. When we pray and ask forgiveness for our sins, he takes the ugly sin that we’ve committed and replaces it with good.
(Bring out the beef jerky container and open it. Share it with a few children.)
