Verse: He who sins is a slave to sin. John 8:34

Props:

Yarn or string that you can break with your hands

Instructions:

Discussion:

Introduction:
-Who likes to get money?
-What if you won money and the person giving you the money said you could either:
-Receive $500.00 immediately
Or
-Receive one cent doubled each day
-What would you pick?
-Do you know if you picked one cent doubled each day of your life you would end up with $5,000,000.
-One cent doesn’t seem like a lot but when you double it each day it adds up to a lot.
-There is something else that grows like this
-Can anyone guess what it is? Sin
-Sin may seem like something small but it can grow rapidly into a serious problem.
-Remember the mess I had last week from just two little drops of super suds

Object Lesson:
-I need a strong volunteer- someone who can break this string.
-Have them demonstrate. (Tie the string around Pastor Eric’s wrist and have them break him lose. Assure Pastor Eric that there will be no problems this week. Our volunteer is strong enough to break the string)
-Re-tie the string.
-This one piece of string represents something bad that Pastor Eric has done.
-Have him name something bad.
-This is no big deal because we know that ____________ can break Pastor Eric free. So, this one sin (string) is no big deal at all. It won’t affect Pastor Eric’s life.
-Wrap the string around again and again and again.
-One sin often leads to another
-If you tell one lie at school then you have to tell another lie to cover up the first one and so on.
-Wrap Pastor Eric until he can’t get out. Tie off the string.
-Now have the volunteer try to break the strings tied around Pastor Eric – He can’t.
-No matter how hard he tries, he will not be able to break the strings.

Point:
-This is how sin works. We do one little sin. It’s no big deal. We can get free from it. Then all of a sudden one sin leads to another which leads to another. Pretty soon we are stuck.
-The Bible teaches us in John 8:34, “He who sins is a slave to sin.”

-Let’s talk about being a slave.
-Would it be nice to be a slave?
-Can you do whatever you want to do?
-Are you happy?

Conclusion:
Boys and girls, you have a choice to make-whether you want to be a slave to sin. Do you want to be tied up and unable to do the things God really wants you to be able to do? (Like Pastor Eric is now)

Do you want to be free?

When we decide to live for Jesus, the Bible teaches us that Jesus forgives our sins. He erases them completely and doesn’t even remember them anymore.

Today you can decide to live for Jesus. When you decide to live for Jesus you are also saying “I will do my best to stay away from sin.”
