Discussion:

1. A lying tongue is like a poisonous snake.
A. Poisonous snakes can kill with a single bite.
(Hold up 1 snake, and relate a story you may have heard about snake bites)
B. The snake uses his fangs like needles to inject poison into his victims.
C. The person who tells a lie puts a spiritual snake in his mouth. (Hold up the picture of the boy’s face and demonstrate this by dangling a rubber snake from his mouth.)

2. People tell lies because they think it helps them.
A. Some people tell lies to get out of trouble. (Dangle a snake from the boy’s mouth)
1. When you do wrong, you are already in trouble.
2. Lying doesn’t get you out of trouble. It only delays the punishment and makes it worse. (Remove this snake)
B. Some people tell lies to get what they want. (Dangle a second snake from the boy’s face)
1. These people tell lies to impress their friends.
2. When another person learns that you have been untruthful, it destroys their faith in you. (Remove the second snake)
C. Some people tell lies because a lying spirit controls them. (Place the third snake in the boy’s mouth)
1. If a person lies again and again, he will become controlled by a lying spirit.
2. The person with a lying spirit lies for no apparent reason.

3. We must keep the lying snakes out of our mouths with the hammer of God’s Word.
A. When we are tempted to lie to get out of trouble, we should speak God’s Word.
1. Jeremiah 23:29 says that God’s Word is like a hammer.

2. We should remember Ephesians 4:25 “let every man speak the truth with his neighbor“ (As you share this verse, smash the snake’s head with the hammer)
B. When we are tempted to lie to get ahead, we should use the hammer of God.
1. Proverbs 19:5 says “He that speaks lies will not escape.”
2. God honors truth and penalizes those who lie. (Smash the second snake.)
C. If we meet someone who lies for no reason, the hammer of God can set them free from a lying spirit. (Strike the last snake with the hammer)
