Verse: Love your neighbor as yourself… Mark 12:31

Props:

4-5 different kinds of fruit
Kiwi

Instructions:

Object Lesson: Show the kids 4-5 different kinds of fruit. Tell them a head of time that they are going to have to choose which fruit they think is the best-looking one. It is important that they don’t pick the best tasting one but the best looking one. Give the kids a moment to think about what they think the best looking fruit is and then have them vote by standing and cheering when you hold the fruit up. Announce the winner (will probably be the Kiwi). Then ask vote on the ugliest one by standing and cheering. Announce the winner

Discussion:

-Talk about who likes kiwi.
-Even though on the outside it is the ugliest fruit-it really is quite tasty and we find it in a lot of things (Strawberry –Kiwi juice, Strawberry –Kiwi yogurt, fruit salad, on cheesecake etc.)
-This kiwi reminds me of some people in our life. There are people at school and in our neighborhoods that look about as ugly as this kiwi.
-They dress funny
-They talk funny
-They smell
-They have zits all over them
-The easy thing for us to do is ignore or make fun of these kinds of people.
-Just like God created the kiwi God created these people and put them in our life for a reason.
-It is our responsibility as Christians to love and honor and respect people that are different from us.
-Someone could turn their nose at this kiwi, never try it and miss out on something really good
-Just like we could turn our head to someone because they are different and miss out on a great friendship or something really special that God created.
-God is not interested on the outside of a person; He is interested on the inside of someone.

Bible Story – James 2:1-9

-2 men come to church. One of them is all dressed up, wearing gold jewelry, and the other is a poor smelly and ugly looking man.
-The usher give the good looking man special attention by showing him to a special seat in the front row. To the ugly poor man the usher says, “Sit here in the back on the floor.”
-Do you think this is right?
-The usher has judged to 2 men by their outward appearance. The usher has shown favoritism.
-This is not right in God’s eyes.

Conclusion:
“ Love your neighbor as yourself . . .” Mark 12:31
