Props:

Clipboard
Football
Other props you may want

Instructions:

** This lesson is kind of like a skit at the beginning

Discussion:

Leader #1 and #2 are football players on a team

Leader #1 – is studying the clipboard intensely.

Leader #2 – What are you doing?

Leader #1 – I am studying the instructions the coach gave us for tomorrow’s football game. I want to get my moves just right.

Leader #2 – Looks at the clip board and complains about the coach’s instructions. He thinks he has better moves.

Leader #1 – Let’s show the kids and see what they think.

Use some duct tape or pylons to mark off some sort of playing field in the center aisle. Explain the kids the set up of the field.

Leader #1 – Now this is what the coach wants me to do tomorrow. His plan always works. I am a good runner, so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. (Find a small child to be the “football”). Pick up the football and run straight down the center of the field.

Leader #2 – Argues about the plan – That’s dumb. That’s boring. It’s too simple. It’ll never work. This is what you need to do. (Pick up the “football” and run around in circles, back and forth –all over the field until eventually you end up at the end.)

Leader #1 – That is crazy!!!!!

(The leaders should argue about who is right and wrong. Then they should ask the kids opinion)

Eventually one of the leaders should talk about what we can learn from this . . ..

Main Point: Boys and girls, we can learn something very important from this today. You see, God is like our coach in life. He has given us instructions for our life in the Bible (hold up the clip board) just like our coach gave us instructions. We all have an important choice to make.

(Leader #1 should explain this part and re-enact the moves as you talk)
Are we going to be like Leader # 1, who obeyed the coach? Leader #1 picked up the football and ran straight down the middle of the field just like the coaches instructions. Are we going to obey God with our life and follow him and plant our life in Him?

(Leader #2 should explain this part and re-enact the moves as you talk)
OR are we going to be like leader #2 who does what they want? They forget about the coach’s plans. They run everywhere . . . (as you are running in circles and all over the field talk about sin that leads you away from God) . . . they lie . . . . they cheat . . . they hang out with the wrong friends. . . .etc. . .

Conclusion: (Have everyone bow their heads and close their eyes) Boys and girls I want you to think about what kind of person you want to be. Are you going to follow God’s instructions or are you going to let your life run out of control? I want to challenge you today to listen to your coach-God – and follow his instructions for your life.
