Object lesson:

Instructions: Give each child a copy of the problem sheet. Explain that they have 3 minutes to answer as many questions as they can on the page. Do not take your eyes off your paper. You want to try and get as many right as possible. If you answer all the questions before the time is up, you should raise their hand. You are not allowed to talk to their neighbor or get help from your neighbor. The person with the most right answers is the winner, and will get a special prize at the end.

While the kids are taking the test, you will try to distract them. Here are some suggestions:

Throw a ball up and down at the front
Throw candy at the kids
Make noise
Sing
Talk to the kids
Play music – their favorite song

Once time is up. Have the kids pass their paper to the person sitting on their left to be marked. Go through the answers with the kids. Then find out who got the highest mark.

Discussion:

Introduction:
The Bible teaches us something very important about living for Jesus.

Hebrews 12:2 says that we need to fix or keep our eyes on Jesus.

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith . . .”

Does that mean we need to find a picture of Jesus and look at it all the time?

What do you think it means?

What are some other things you could keep your eyes on instead of Jesus?

What will happen if you keep your eyes on other things?

Memory verse Contest:
Say the verse together. Then have a yelling contest. Ask for volunteers to come to the front and yell the verse as loud as they can in the microphone.

Discussion:
Were the questions easy or hard?
Did the distractions make it easier or harder?
How did you keep from letting the distractions affect you?
Which distraction was the most difficult to ignore?

What can we do to ignore distractions to keep us from concentrating on Jesus?

Bible Story:
-There is a famous story in the Bible.
-The disciples of Jesus were in a boat.
-Jesus was praying in the mountains
-There was a bad storm.
-The disciples were afraid.
-They became even more scared when they saw someone walking towards their boat on the water.
-At first they thought it was a ghost
-Does anyone know who it was? Jesus
-Peter called out to Jesus and asked if he could walk on the water like Him.
-Jesus told Peter to come to him.
-Peter kept his eyes focused on Jesus- stepped out of the boat and began walking on the water.
-All of a sudden Peter began to sink – do you know why?
-Instead of looking at Jesus, he got distracted. He started looking at the waves, and thinking about the storm.
-Peter cried out to Jesus and Jesus helped Him.
-Peter got his eyes back on Jesus.

Conclusion:
We need to keep our eyes on Jesus. The devil will do his best to distract us. He wants us to look away from Jesus. When we keep our eyes on Jesus we will be able to do whatever He wants us to do.
