Discussion:

Introduction/Review:
-What have you been talking about for the last few weeks in Kidz Club?
-Plant your roots in Christ and let Him be the foundation for your life.
-What does this verse mean?
-What are some things you can do to plant your roots in Christ?
-Last week we also talked about 2 people that speak to us.
-Do you remember who they were?
-God
-The Devil

-God speaks to us when we read the Bible, when we go to church, when we pray

-The devils speaks to us too-He puts thoughts in our mind like
-Forget church you have other more important things to do
-Just steal the candy bar-no one will ever know-beside you are hungry
-Beat up that kid at school that annoys you-he deserves it.

Object Lesson:

Choose an adult or big volunteer – could be one of the teachers

-This person represents the devil.

Choose a little child – give him one end of the rope and the “devil” the other end

-Now these 2 people – the devil and ___________ are going to play a game of “Tug of War”.

-In our life we find ourselves very often in a game of “Tug of War” with the devil. He is always trying to get us to follow him. He is always trying to pull us into sin.

-We all know that ____________ cannot win this “Tug of War” game all on his own. He needs some help.

Choose a child, one at a time, for each sign. Tape one sign on one child, and talk about what is written on the sign-it is a tool that helps us defeat the Devil. Once you have taped on the sign and explained the tool-act out a “tug of War” game with the players. The Devil should be stronger than the children but a little less stronger than the children each time. He should be acting worried by the last couple the children. On the last “Tug of War” the children should win.

Salvation – is another word for deciding to live for Jesus. No one can fight the temptations of the devil with out having Jesus in their life. We need to decide to live for Jesus. It is the most important decision we will ever make. This is the first step to defeating the devil.

Church attendance – It is very important for us to go to church as often as we can – Kidz Club, youth , and Sundays. When we are at church we learn how to fight against the devil. We meet others who are living for Jesus. Leaders can talk to us and encourage us to live for Jesus.

Bible Reading – Food gives our body physical strength to do things like play football, dance, run, and play with our friends. The Bible gives us spiritual strength to live for Jesus. We need to read our Bible everyday. We should not wait until church events to read our Bible. We need to read our Bible on our own everyday too. The Bible helps us to get to know Jesus better, and teaches us how to handle problems.

Prayer – Who likes to talk to their friends? Prayer is when we talk to our best friend. We need to spend time everyday talking to our best friend – Jesus. We can talk to Him about anything we want – our struggles, the things we are thankful for, and we can ask Him for help. We should never be too busy to talk to God. When we spend time praying we get closer to God.

Self-Control – We have the power of choice. We can freely choose to obey God or disobey God. No one can make us obey or disobey God. Everyday we need to make good choices. Self-control means choosing what is right in every situation. We need to make choices that will please Jesus everyday in every situation. This will help us defeat the devil.

** At the end, when the kids win, give them all a piece of candy and have them sit down.

Conclusion: Today we talked about 5 things we can do to “plant our roots” in Jesus. God has given us the power to defeat the devil, and to live our lives planted in him. We need to use these 5 tools to do this.

If we only do one of the five things, we will not defeat the devil. For example if we go to church each week, but during the week we do not pray, read our Bibles, live for Jesus, or use self-control, we will give into the things the devil wants us to do. We will lose our temper and beat up the annoying kid in our class. We will curse and say things that we shouldn’t. We will give and do things with our friends we shouldn’t do.

We need to do all five things. We need to: decide to live for Jesus, prayer, read our Bibles, go to church, and use self-control.
