Discussion:

Introduction:
-Who has ever thought that you heard God speak to you?
-What did God’s voice sound like?
-What did He say or what was the situation?
-If we let Him, God will speak to us every day-all the time.

Object lesson:
Choose a volunteer. Put a towel over them so they cannot see. Have them stand at one end of the room. Have some other volunteers stand scattered between you and the volunteer who cannot see.

Explain:
Today I am going to represent God’s voice. The person with the towel over their head is a Christian. The space between us is their life.

Now we all know that life is not always as easy or smooth as we would like it. Things happens. There are situations we face. There are decisions we have to make.

If I let my volunteer walk to me without giving them directions-what would happen? They would bump into things. They would have a hard time.

Now I can give them directions on how to get to me successfully just like God gives us directions on how to live.

Can you hear my voice clearly? Begin giving them directions on how to get to you.

Now if it were this easy in life to hear God’s voice you would be all set, but who knows it is not.

It is not this easy to hear God’s voice because along the way you have people telling you other things and you have distractions.

What are some distractions you might have?

#1 Sin a little it won’t hurt (Have someone repeat this over and over in a normal voice)

#2 You are not worth anything (Have someone repeat this over and over in a normal voice)

# 3 You don’t need to go to church –stay home. (Have someone repeat this over and over)

#4 You are too tired to read your Bible and pray (Have someone repeat this over and over)

#5 I wonder what is on TV. Can you beat your high score in your favorite video game? (Have someone repeat this over and over)

# 6 You can serve God when you get older-Have fun right now. (Have someone repeat this over and over)

(Now have all the distractions speak at the same time in a regular voice) Now it is harder to hear the voice of God over all these distractions. You can but you really have to concentrate.

This is what it is like for us. God will always speak to us. We need to train ourselves not to get distracted, but to listen everyday to what God is saying.

(Continue to guide the person through the maze to yourself.)

Conclusion:
Jesus said in the Bible that He is the Good Shepherd.
What is the job of a shepherd?
Let’s read these verse together:

“ . . the sheep listen to the voice of the shepherd. He calls his own sheep, using their names, and he leads them out. He brings all of his sheep out. Then he goes ahead of them and leads them. They follow him because they know his voice.” John 10:3-4

These verses remind me of what we have been talking about today. Jesus-the good shepherd- speaks to us. He calls us by name. He leads us. We need to follow him and not get distracted by those around us.
