Good vs. Bad Friends Ahithophel

Verse: Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character 1 Corinthians 15:35

Props:

1 can of dog food
2 cans of peaches


Instructions:

(Take the label off the dog food. Carefully take the label off one can of peaches and put it on the dog food)

Discussion:

Introduction
A. Everyday of our life we have choices to make.
B. One area that is really important is our friend.
C. We have to choose whom we are going to hang around.
D. The Bible gives us a lot of pointers on who the right kinds of friends are
E. Who do you think the right kind of friend is?
i. Someone who loves God
ii. Someone who obeys God
iii. Someone who is kind and thoughtful

The Good Verses The Bad Friend
i. David was a man who loved God.
ii. First he was a Sheppard boy-who wrote beautiful songs and poetry about God.
iii. Eventually David became king.
iv. David had 2 friends-one good and one not so good.

(Choose to brave volunteers for the rest of the lesson)

v. David’s first friend reminds me of this can of peaches. Talk about who likes to eat canned peaches. His friend’s name was Jonathan. Jonathan was a good friend to David.
a. Jonathan was the son of King Saul
b. King Saul was a wicked man who did not serve God
a. Jonathan honored God even though his father did not,
b. Jonathan wanted to be David’s friend even though his father hated David.
a. Jonathan admired David’s faith and courage.
b. Jonathan risked his father’s anger to befriend David.
c. Jonathan knew that David was to be the king someday instead of him.
a. Jonathan was unselfish.
b. Jonathan was a true and loyal friend
d. Jonathan was a good friend of David’s not only on the outside on the inside – in his heart he really loved David (open the can of peaches and serve it to the brave volunteer)

vi. David’s second friend reminds me of this other can of peaches. David’s second friend’s name is Ahithophel. Ahithophel was not a good friend to David. (He was like this can of peaches)
a. Ahithophel gave good counsel to King David
a. It was said that Ahithophel gave godly counsel to David
a. David and Ahithophel had many good times together.
b. One day David did something really bad.
a. David asked God to forgive him and God did.
b. But Ahithophel could not forgive David.
c. Ahithophel stayed angry with David.
a. His felling of anger grew worse everyday.
b. Ahithophel refused to forgive David.
a. One day Absalom, David’s son cam to Ahithophel with a plan to kill David and want him to be apart of it.
b. Ahithophel agreed
c. Ahithophel and Absalom plotted to kill David.
a. Ahithophel was not a true friend.
A. He let himself get angry and bitter.
a. He was filled inside with poison even though he looked good on the outside.
b. Ahithophel was like this can of peaches. On the outside he seemed like a good friend, but he had bad feelings in his heart that prevented him from being the friend that David needed.

Let’s see what is in the second can (Have a volunteer come up to eat what is in the second can)
a. Open it and put some in a bowl
b. Hand it to the volunteer-it is dog food.
